A Mother's LoveLioness and Cub
Soft pastels and pastel pencils I took the reference photo for this piece when I was in Botswana and the interaction I observed between cub and mother truly melted my heart. The body language revealed everything; tenderness, love, devotion ..... it just goes to show that animals create similar relationship bonds to us. As part of a new series/collection of work, I've included an African-themed background and frame to provide a new style of identity. It's always good to push myself to try new things. This piece is also dedicated to my mum for all the love, support, encouragement and help she has provided to me, especially during tough and challenging times. Drop-Down Purchase Options

Future FocusCheetah
Soft pastels and pastel pencils I photographed this cheetah and his brother during an incredible encounter on an early morning safari in Botswana. They were sat, slim and tall, on a small mound of earth, pensively surveying the horizon as they scanned their vision from one side to the other. Watching. Waiting. This piece reminds me of the importance of being in the present moment, while also focusing towards the future and having somewhere to aim for. Drop-Down Purchase Options

KitsoLion
Soft pastels and pastel pencils ‘Kitso’ means ‘Wisdom’ in Tswana. I took the reference photo for this artwork when I was in Botswana and knew I wanted him to have a name in the local language. It took me a while to research a name that both sounded right and had the correct sentiment. This is perhaps one of the only pieces I’ve made where the name/title has come before I’ve even started and it enabled me to ensure he really embodied his character as I brought him to life. When I Grow Up . . .Elephant Calf and Elephant
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils This piece is about the aspirations and dreams we have as children. We grow up wanting to be big and strong like our caregivers and have few limitations on our capabilities. There is a beautiful naivety in youngsters and their boundless enthusiasm and sense of playfulness are infectious. This piece also honours our role as adults and how we provide much needed support and guidance to the young people in our lives. With the recent death of my brother-in-law, my role as Auntie T has stepped up a notch and I aspire to be the steady, reassuring and loving presence my nephew and niece require. This piece was originally inspired by my time in Botswana watching a gorgeous baby elephant as it navigated the world amongst its giant family members. Drop-Down Purchase Options

GotchaBarn Owl
Soft pastels and pastel pencils Barn owls were my Grandad’s favourite animal so I wanted to make a piece that would make him smile. I’ve entitled it ‘Gotcha’ because I wonder how many people will view it and unknowingly tilt their head to the side to mirror the action of the owl. I know this element of humour would have made him laugh! Drop-Down Purchase Options

Make An EntranceGreat White Shark
Soft pastels and pastel pencils I’ve been fascinated with sharks since I was a child and after spending 3 weeks volunteering on one of the cage-diving boats in South Africa, I knew the next step was to observe the big breeding females off the coast of Mexico. It took 10 years until my dream was realised but it was worth the wait. The water clarity at Guadalupe Island is phenomenal, making it the Mecca of locations to observe these fascinating creatures. I witnessed many behavioural intricacies in how they acted with each other and even how they interacted with me…… I had a couple of beautiful encounters where it was obvious they were quietly intrigued by me and we shared a connected moment eye-to-eye. I will always remember how that felt which is why I want to share my experience with you so that more people can understand that this species is sadly very misunderstood. Notice there are no 'jaws' in my artwork. I want my first-hand knowledge to provide the wider public with a new perception that is somewhat different from the misinformed Hollywood movie. Sunrise ReflectionCheetahs
Soft pastels and pastel pencils Observing these male cheetahs in Botswana was the most incredible and magical sighting. As luck would have it, two people in the group had a flight change so we had to leave camp on our last morning even earlier than usual and we were out in the reserve at a place and time we wouldn't have ordinarily been. As we came around a corner, we caught sight of these two cheetah brothers. It was a moment of perfect serendipity. Not only did we see the first wild cheetahs I've ever seen but we had the glorious, warm, glowing light as the sun began to rise, and even better, we had the whole experience to ourselves! It was simply stunning. The whole time we spent with them is stamped on my heart and archived in my memories. It is something I will never forget. Drop-Down Purchase Options

Life in the Palm of your HandGorilla Infant
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils I want this piece to be a reminder of how we treasure new-born life and how we love, protect and nurture it. As we get older, this sometimes gets a little lost or faded amongst busy modern life, so it’s time to recapture that sense of wonder about the world and to treat ourselves more kindly. ImaniFemale Giraffe
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils 'Imani' means 'faith' in Swahili. This felt like such an appropriate name for how I was feeling when I was creating her as I had to hold so much faith ..... faith in myself, faith in my abilities, faith in my artwork. Being an artist is one thing. Being a self-employed business entrepreneur is an entirely different thing. Everyone has access to faith and I want this piece to symbolise the strength in believing that things in life are possible. Drop-Down Purchase Options

Peepo!Mountain Gorilla Infant
Soft pastels and pastel pencils I photographed this gorilla infant during a mountain trek in Rwanda. It was wonderful to see the Hirwa gorilla family group in their natural environment and witness their behaviours and characteristics. I loved how similar the infants were to human children; lots of playing, rolling all over the floor and swinging in tree branches. I couldn’t help but laugh! I wanted to capture that essence of youthful naivety and joyful cheekiness in my artwork as it reminds me of children playing hide-and-seek behind objects where you can still see them! An Enchanting EncouterBlack Panther

TakayaWolf
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils This piece was inspired by a BBC documentary I saw. Even though wolves live in packs, Takaya (meaning wolf in another language) was found living on his own on an island in Canada for 8 years. He perfectly adapted to the environment to find new food sources and coped with solo living .... but unfortunately after all that time surviving so well, he ended up back on the mainland (perhaps by sea drifts while out hunting otter?) and then was shot by a hunter/farmer. A truly sad ending to such a heroic spirit, which is why I wanted the beautiful yet haunting howl image to honour his voice and speak of the injustice of his death and to acknowledge what a phenomenal life he led. If you're interested in watching the documentary or finding out more, research Takaya the Lone Wolf. Purchase Options

InkosiLion
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils Naming my artwork is very important to me and I knew from the outset that he needed an African title. I spent hours researching African names and words before discovering the perfect one. ‘Inkosi’ means Chief or King in Zulu and Xhosa, and I think it suits his personality down to the ground. To me, he represents authoritative qualities of a leader; he is strong and powerful yet wise and gracious. Inkosi is more than just a drawing on a piece of paper to me. I’ve spent hours and hours crafting and bringing him to life and my belief and faith in him as he emerged has helped me get through some tough times. Drop-Down Purchase Options

The Show GirlFlamingo
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils This piece was inspired by a video blog by Richard Branson talking about the flamingos on Necker Island....... maybe one day she'll end up there to meet her muse?! I was keen to step away from the traditional and obvious imagery of a flamingo and instead showcase the razzamatazz of those beautiful, pink, delicate feathers. This Show Girl has definitely got what it takes to put on a show. Drop-Down Purchase Options

A Symbol of HopeWhite Rhino
Soft pastels and pastel pencils I don't want to ever imagine a time when there aren't any rhinos living in the wild. Having witnessed the results of poaching first-hand, I created this piece to celebrate the magnificence of these pre-historic looking mammals. It was a pleasure to witness and photograph this female rhino in South Africa in 2017 and I've loved bringing her to life on paper. Those horns might be a downfall for the species but I wanted them to be the centre of attention in my artwork as they represent 'A Symbol of Hope' that the future world will recognise where they truly belong. Tropical GazeToco Toucan
Iridescent pastels, soft pastels and pastel pencils A splash of colour in life does the world of good! I love how this toucan made me think of summer holidays, ice lollies and sunsets while I was creating my artwork. Bright, exotic birds fill me with wonder at nature's ability to create such vibrant and luminous colours and it's guaranteed that their tropical hues will light up my eyes and make my heart smile. *Note: There is only a minor and subtle use of iridescent pastels in the original artwork. This effect is not captured in photographs. Drop-Down Purchase Options

Make a SplashAfrican Penguin
Soft pastels and pastel pencils My artwork always speaks to me as I create it, there is always a moral to learn, and this cheeky African penguin taught me the fundamental rule that I am the only person who can make my own mark (splash!) on the world. I cannot rely on anyone else to create the ripples of passion and enthusiasm for what I do. I hope this inspires you to go out there and own what you do. Soft pastels and pastel pencils I've never had the pleasure of observing orangutans in the wild but it is certainly up there on my bucket-list. Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils I loved working on this piece as it brought back wonderful memories of my trip to Rwanda seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild. Stand TallMale Giraffe
Soft pastels and pastel pencils This piece portrays a number of meanings to me. It is about presenting ourselves to the world with our head held high, scars and all! Nature is not perfect and should be celebrated as such. We are all uniquely individual in how we present ourselves and should stand tall with pride for who we are. I saw this giraffe during a walking safari in South Africa. I will never forget the beautiful moment we shared; me watching him and him watching me. It made me realise that when you are interested in something, you equally become interesting yourself. Drop-Down Purchase Options

A Bewitching AllureHummingbird
Iridescent pastels, soft pastels and pastel pencils Nature fascinates me. Its beauty is breathtakingly simple yet intricately detailed. ‘A Bewitching Allure’ is all about the spellbinding charm of presenting yourself as nature intended. Our survival instinct is to follow the crowd and to fit in, but in a world of ‘influencers’ and Instagram pictures, it can be easy to pretend to be someone we’re not. Without a doubt, there is something far more attractive in being true to yourself and being confident in your own skin. Showing up as the best version of yourself will evoke an iridescent shimmer of appeal, just like mother nature’s exquisite hummingbirds. *Note: The use of iridescent pastels in the original artwork enables it to glimmer and sparkle in the light. Embracing the FutureGorilla and Infant
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils Louis Armstrong was right, ‘What a Wonderful World’ we live in. My artwork celebrates the magnificence, yet imminent scarcity of the endangered mountain gorillas and many other species on the planet. We are at a moment in time where we need to emulate the fierce maternal protectiveness of the gorilla in my artwork and nurture the environment and wildlife that make our world so wonderful. ‘Embracing the Future’ is exactly what we all need to responsibly do. Proudly putting our arms around the wonders of this earth will make sure the species and ecosystems are here for generations to come. Sir David Attenborough says ‘we all have an important role to play in building a better future . . . we must rediscover how to live in balance with nature and help to create a better world’. In the SpotlightZebra
Charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils For some of us, being in the spotlight is something we shy away from. The unnerving, glaring attention and vulnerability of revealing our true selves can be daunting. But if we always live life in the shadows, we will never be able to truly shine. Battle ScarsLion
Soft pastels and pastel pencils It would be impossible to go through life without encountering challenges and conflicts. In some way or other, the pandemic will have given all of us some new battle scars during the last few months. The scars we acquire, whether physical, mental or emotional, teach us lessons. The trick is to develop resilience and pick yourself up to come back stronger. It’s time to harness that inner lion spirit: learn the lessons and find that extra bit of fight to power through. Soft pastels and pastel pencils This piece required a lot of time, a lot of layers and a lot of love. It captures a shared moment in time that highlights a relationship bond and the comfort of closeness.... something I think we can all relate to in 2020. Look LIFE in the EyesTiger
Soft pastels and pastel pencils The intention behind this piece is more philosophical than just being a simple depiction of a tiger face. Imagine your life were to flash before your eyes and answer these questions.... Are you currently living your purpose? Are you making the most of your full potential? Are you happy, fulfilled and leading the life you want to live? Perhaps a bit of contemplative reflection might help you step away from the daily grind to see what you couldn’t see before and make new choices...... Life is precious; make each day count. Soft pastels and pastel pencils Connection to nature is what keeps me alive and happy; whether it's walking in the fields in the UK or out on safari in Africa. It captivates me and makes my heart smile with an astounding sense of peace. When I'm out in nature, I'm inspired to simply 'be' . . . to watch, to listen, to smell . . . to take it all in slowly and appreciate in wonder the details, intricacies and cleverness of the natural world.
